TESOL’S MISSION, VALUES, AND VISION

Mission
TESOL’s mission is to ensure excellence in English language teaching to speakers of other languages.

Values

  • professionalism in language education
  • individual language rights
  • accessible, high-quality education
  • collaboration in a global community
  • interaction of research and reflective practice for educational improvement

respect for diversity and multiculturalism

TESOL's Vision Statement
Effective communication among communities and their individual members is essential for peaceful coexistence and for solving many of the problems now facing the world. The constant flow of information from country to country and continent to continent in the shrinking world creates the need for institutions that encourage and support the development of language and intercultural communication skills. TESOL, an association of English language educators who work with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds in a wide variety of settings, is uniquely positioned to give a coordinated, knowledgeable response at the global, national, and local levels to issues affecting institutions that foster the development of effective human communications.

44TH ANNUAL TESOL CONVENTION AND EXHIBIT
The annual TESOL convention offers English language teaching professionals from around the globe the premier opportunity for professional development in the field. Participants exchange ideas and practices, keep abreast of current trends, foster their professional networks, receive mentoring on research projects, review the latest books and professional resources, and learn about advocacy efforts in their community and around the world.

Convention 2010 Vision Statement
As TESOL enters a new decade, the association continues to change and grow. The 2010 and 2011 convention teams support a dynamic professional organization that not only listens to the needs and concerns of its members, but considers, responds, and involves them in decisions that concern issues critical to our profession. We promote a global perspective inclusive of every branch of ESL/EFL. We see a TESOL that advocates for respect and recognition of ESL/EFL as a profession; that actively promotes professional training of educators and advances equality of pay and benefits. We believe in TESOL as an organization that connotes shared scholarship, practices, and the warmth of friendship. We visualize our members, not in the convention's shadow, but rather as the source of its light. TESOL 2009 Call for Participation p. 3

Convention 2010 Theme: Re-imagining TESOL
You are invited to join us in re-imagining TESOL at the Boston TESOL Party! The 2010 Convention Team is planning a variety of sessions and activities to encourage professional conversations, promote member participation in the organization, stimulate thought and reflection, and revitalize your zest for teaching. Submit your proposal to add your voice to the ongoing dialogue about the issues, practices, policies, and direction that our profession and our organization should take as we begin a new decade.

The Venue: Boston, Massachusetts
Boston is a historical town with many wonderful museums, historical sites, bookstores, and universities. Boston has an abundance of musical performances with opportunities to hear various groups, many from local schools. The area restaurants feature local seafood and many types of international cuisine. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority offers excellent rail and bus service to all parts of the area for very reasonable prices.

A letter concerning the status of your proposal will be sent via e-mail to the person designated as the Organizing Author or Correspondent as well as all other presenters by the end of October.
